What is a cycling shirt?
A cycling shirt, funnily enough is a specialist shirt for cycling. While most amateur cyclists get way with conventional clothing when riding, a cycling shirt offers unparalleled advantages for the serious rider.
A cycling shirt is cut long at the back to suit the bent-forward position in professional cycling. Any pockets on the shirt are positioned on the back section as pockets at the front would get in the way, and would also tend to spill their contents. The zipper on men’s cycling shirts is usually made extra long so that the rider can open up the cycling shirt when he gets too hot.
The cycling shirt is usually a nice tight fit to to cut down on any air resistance. Cycling shirts are made from a special material which is designed to wick (or absorb) moisture from the riders skin, thus keeping them cooler and considerably more comfortable than if they were wearing a standard shirt.
Professional cycling is very well sponsored, and the traditional cycling shirt is usually adorned with the logos of cycling teams and mulit-national companies.
The origin of the cycling shirt
The most well known cycling shirts are either the maillot vert from the Tour de France or the pink shirt the Giro d’Italia race.
These shirts were made the same color as the paper that the original sponsors newspapers were printed on. Many other cycling shirts are styled after the sponsoring companys’ logo, and some cycling shirts colors and designs are switched when a new sponsor comes along.
